CYVM - Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut, Canada Print E-mail

Summer VFR at 2am!Qikiqtarjuaq, formerly known as Broughton Island,  is situated on an island on the east coast of Baffin Island. It is the closest Nunavut to community to Greenland. Located at the north end of Auyuittuq National Park, the community features great scenery, as does Pangnirtung, at the south end of the Park.  The Qikiqtarjuaq area teems with marine wildlife and polar bears. Located on the edge of Baffin Bay also means that the area sees lots of icebergs.

We've heard from a number of pilots who've stopped there and found it a great visit. For those travelling in single engine or ultralight aircraft, this is an important alternate in case you're unable to get in to Pangnirtung or Iqaluit.

The plane in the picture is Paul Nopper's Aviat Husky, photographed near Qikiqtarjuaq a few years ago. Paul's been up this way a few times, and taken some great photographs.

Qikiqtarjuaq Accommodation, Tourism and Links Print E-mail

Qikiqtarjuaq 2001 photo: Angsar WalkQikiqtarjuaq is located on a small island off the east coast of Baffin Island in Nunavut.  For many years, the community was known as Broughton Island. The name was changed to the Inuktitut name Qikiqtarjuaq ("large island") in 1998.

The population is about 593 (2021 Census). Qikiqtarjuaq does have an active tourism sector, providing local whale watching, hunting and other activities, along with access to the north entrance to Auyuittuq National Park. The region is on the main iceberg route south, and so the community gets a lot of bergs!

Qikiqtarjuaq is the last airport on the east coast of Baffin Island on the route across to Greenland.
