Anglican Church, Kimmirut Kimmirut is one of the earliest settlements in the south Baffin area of Nunavut.  The Anglican Church has had a presence here since about 1909. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police established a post here in 1911. The community site was determined by these outside interests.

Today, Kimmirut is a small community of about 400 people.  Jobs in the community are few. There are a number of artists, and many people spend considerable time engaged in traditional hunting and gathering activities. For some great views of the community and the local weather, visit kimmirutweather.com.  They have a wonderful photo album.

Local attractions include the Katannilik Territorial Park, which contains the Soper River, a Canadian Heritage River. The restored Dewey Soper House in the middle of town serves as the Visitors' Centre and registration centre for the Park. There are also active local artists working in soapstone and other media.

Kimmirut was also the site of a sapphire find, currently held by True North Gems.

Accommodation:

  • The only hotel is the Kimik Inn. It is a small hotel, and hours of operation for the dining room are limited, so be sure to call them directly for room availability and meal times information.
  • The Katannilik Park visitors' Centre can sometimes arrange homestays with local Inuit families. There is a small campground just outside Kimmirut called the Taqaiqsirvik Territorial Park. It provides basic overnight camping for people going to and from the Katannilik Park. Check with the Katannilik Park Visitors Centre for more information.
