Grise Fiord by 172 Print E-mail

C-GEGG enroute to Grise Fiord, NunavutWerner Koch of Vancouver made a trip from CYPK Pitt Meadows, BC to CYGZ Grise Fiord, Nunavut in July 2011.  He went via CYZF Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, CYCB Cambridge Bay, CYYHTaloyoak, and CYAB Arctic Bay Nunavut,  to Grise Fiord. The return trip was via Arctic Bay, Cambridge Bay, CYCO Kugluktuk, CYVQ Norman Wells, NWT and Muncho Lake, BC.

Werner had to modify his 1968 Cessna 172I  C-GEGG to carry an extra 120 gallons of fuel beyond Cambridge Bay, as that's the last place on his route with 100LL avgas.

He reports all went smoothly. He had great weather and didn't get stuck anywhere.

Grise Fiord is the most northerly permanent settlement in Canada, at the south end of Ellesmere Island.  North of Grise Fiord you'll find the Environment Canada weather station at Eureka, and the Canadian Forces station Alert, at the top of Ellesmere Island.

It is pretty unusual to make a single engine, private flight that far north.
